Short Story Aruba

Opposites attract – this idiom could have derived its origin from the Aruba Island.

At the west coast of the island you find fine, white, palm– lined sandy beaches; framed by calm and clear Caribbean water. The longest beach measures 12 kilometers and is said to be one of the most beautiful beaches of the world. The coast of Aruba that faces the wind is the wild roughneck of the island: here in the north the waves pound against the cliff with the full force of nature that let emerge arched bridges out of coral and coral algae and deep, snug lying limestone caves. In between these two extremes a desert landscape is situated where big cactuses as well as the divi-divi trees, formed by the trade wind, are growing. Rock formations high as a house are reminiscent of bygone deities.

The island is 30 km long and maximum 9 km wide and is located in the heart of the southern Caribbean, far from the coast of Venezuela. It forms part of the Netherlands Antilles and stands for the A in the name of the ABC-Islands. Aruba occupies a special status within the Kingdom of the Netherlands - that means it is politically independent; however, the national defence and foreign policy still belong to field of duty of the kingdom. The official language is Dutch, although the spoken language is the wild potpourri of Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese, with a lacing of the Indian language, English and French. The history has to be blamed for that because every colonial power played its part as a proprietor. However, you get on with English and Spanish almost everywhere.

Noble resorts and luxury hotels are to find at the dream beaches in the south and west. You may be spoilt for choice. In the capital city Oranjestad you find a lot of multisided stores and markets, no matter whether you are looking for luxury articles or indigenous handcraft. And depending on what you feel like, you can experience the Aruban manner to celebrate: carnival, summer festivals, firework display at the New Year’s Eve or a parade in honour of the Queen.

You have the choice of international restaurants in dozens; among those you find Argentinean, Italian and Thai ones. Freshly made fish dishes and seafood lure everywhere.

The local cuisine bears imaginative names like Scavechi, Sopi di Jambo and Keshi Yena with a little Dushi di Tamarjin for dessert is definitely worth a try. After dinner you can either hurl yourselves into night life or go for a long walk on the beach far away from civilization. Aruba offers local rhythms to dance, live entertainment in the night clubs, gambling in one of the eleven casinos or a bar-hopping-tour from one hip bar to the next one on the island.

Gorgeous fishes and coral reefs invite you for snorkeling or even for diving. A trip with a submarine or glass- bottom boat shows you the exciting underwater world of Aruba.

Various ranches offer excursion on horseback. Try your luck in deep sea fishing or just go sailing again, be it in a skiff, a catamaran or a trimaran. The Aruban Golf Club possesses one of the most exceptional nine- hole golf courses of the Caribbean. You want action? Aruba is one of the best sail boarding territories of the world. On the side of the island that is facing away from the wind, you can either go wakeboarding or speed across the Caribbean Sea with a jet ski.

In a country that is out of the hurricane zone, where cool trade winds, an average annual temperature of 28 degree Celsius and a low humidity prevail and over all a modicum of only 50ccm of rain yearly is to be found, show that it doesn’t make any difference whether you spend your honeymoon in January or in July on this island. With KLM Aruba is only ten flying hours away from Europe.

When you start exploring and get to know Aruba, you will not miss out the bright faces all around you. It is a matter of sincere, deeply felt delight. Every tourist of Aruba will willingly confirm that. This friendliness, hospitality and distinct vitality are the biggest treasures of Aruba. No one really knows where they arise from. Aruba is the wellspring of cheerfulness and joie de vivre that is „contaminous“. And the best about it is that there is no proven remedy against it. Bonbini .......... Welcome to Aruba!
