Short Story Costa Rica
Costa Rica – rich coast, that’s what Christopher Columbus baptized this beautiful country in 1502. He could just sense how rich this country in the heart of Central America really is. Rich in nature – the replication of the garden of Even. Is there anything more beautiful for your honeymoon?
Costa Rica is a micro cosmos with tropical, subtropical, temperate and cold climatic zones. In the central highlands around the capital San José dominates the most healthy climate of the world with a constant temperature of 20 degree Celsius. The mountainous areas are cool, humid and green. The Caribbean coast is rather warm and humid. The Pacific side again is of a warm and dry climate. The tropical forests are dry and it is permanently raining in the cloud forests. There are two seasons, the dry one from December to May and a humid one from June to November.
This small country (the same size as Switzerland) is situated in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua in the north and Panama in the south. The country does not possess any military and pours its money into the education of its people instead. The people are of culture, friendly and speak, as it is the common practice in Latin America, Spanish. Something like hecticness does not exist, everything goes with the typical Mediterranean calmness. Costa Rica is the politically most stabile and wealthiest country of Latin America. Still, one should not blank out the horse- sense on a journey here as well as in any other country. All over the world you meet people who have the intention to cheat you and the same holds true for Costa Rica.
What else has Costa Rica to offer? 1800 km of coast with beaches of all shades and waves that you have never seen before. There are several active volcanoes, the best known is the Arenal, probably because it erupts every 15 minutes. 20 national parks span one fourth of the whole country, where you can find 9000 different flowering plants, 850 species of birds, 205 mammal species und 376 different reptiles and amphibians. The rain forests are the home of playing monkeys, crocodiles, uncountable lizards, poisonous frogs and a vertiginous diversity of exotic birds, insects and butterflies. Orchid lovers look out! Here are about 1200 different species of orchids.
What about a little thrill during the honeymoon? Look into boiling volcanoes, surf on oversized waves, dive with whales and dolphins, speed down a wild river with a kayak or a rubber dinghy, encounter poisonous snakes on a jungle tour or go windsurfing at wind force eight on the Laguna de Arenal. Or just chill in a hammock á deux and enjoy the pure life (pura vida). There is no better start into a life de deux!
Normally your travel from Europe to Costa Rica by aeroplane and land in San José. It is beneficial to check the offers of flights by KLM long time in advance. After your arrival in the country you can either travel on by aeroplane or rent a car. With a low budget we recommend the well developed minibus network. Accommodations exist as there are birds in Costa Rica – in every colour, size and furnishing. What you book and in which region (mainly required from December to February) should depend on the activities you plan to do and on your budget as well. In the region around the Rio Tortugero you can enjoy the Amazonas feeling with the appropriate wildlife or sport fishing on the Caribbean Sea. The Caribbean lifestyle is alive in Puerto Viejo with good food, rum and excellent surfing possibilities. In the region of Guanacaste the infrastructure of tourism is the broadest of Costa Rica. The region of the „Gold coast“ offers countless beaches at the Pacific with beautiful sunsets. Here one lives the `beach life´ with large waves and nachos that are bigger than your behind! There are gorgeous haciendas in the area around the Big Arenal Lake and the identically named volcano that are proper for a stay in the inland. Further south the mountains become higher. The scenery around the massif of the Cerro Chirripó (3.982m high) with its jagged rocks offers a totally different adventure for wanderers. On the Osa peninsula and the larger peninsula Nicoya, both coastal to the Pacific, you can live the combination of tropical forest and beach-honeymoon.
We would not book anything on a round trip because the individuality will suffer to much from a fixed timetable. The prices are a lot below those in Europe; anyhow they are many times over the prices in the neighbouring Latin American countries. Regular accommodations start at 10€ per night, midrange are between 30€ and 80€ whereas the breakfast is included in the price of the room. Luxury hotels and boutique resorts cost 100€ and 400€. Ordinary meals start at about 3€, better ones at about 8€. You find some of the hotels, resorts and haciendas that are best to spend your honeymoon there, in our hotel overview. An intensive search in the internet might be auspicious. We consider that the offers of the big organiser or organising bureaus for package tours are little overpriced.
