Short Story Maldives
The Maldives are the honeymoon destination number one. You ask yourself why? You know the answer yourself if not you would not have opened this page ;-)
Do you know this daydream: you and your partner on a dream island, there is only white coral sand, the turquoise lagoon and tropical vegetation without any dangerous animals. You live in a dream bungalow made of teakwood and enjoy your dinner prepared by a celebrity chef in a luxury resort. When you come back directly to your bungalow from snorkelling the boy has already cleaned your rooms, tidied up and lovely decorated your bed with blossoms from orchids.

It’s not a dream – just spend your honeymoon on the Maldives as long as they still exist. The paradise containing 1200 coral islands that are situated within 19 atolls is directly affected by the climatic change. The melting polar caps let the sea level rise as it should be generally known. The highest point of the Maldives which is the capital Male, lies just 2 m high. Therefore it is just a question of time that the paradisiacal islands are swallowed in by the sea.
When you visit the Maldives you are spoilt for choice. There are 90 islands of most different size that are used touristy. Those are located widespread in a „chain of pearls“ of islands together with 200 further islands that are inhabited by the locals. There are none of the typical hotels comparable to concrete blocks. There are just a few contact points with the locals except the obligatory contact with the waiter in the resort, the staff in the bar or your personal boy.

Not only on the resort islands do the locals confront the tourists with respect and friendliness. Should you visit the only town, Male, on the equally named island, it is a must to respect the religious rites of the Islam. Snide remarks about Allah in public often followed by reproving the person strictly. In respect of the foreign culture you should not wear any transparent clothes, shorts or shoulder free tops (except on the hotel islands). On the resort islands one usually wears only shorts and a bikini. For dinner in the restaurant, as it is normal in the western hemisphere, different clothes are expected. But we have never seen a smoking or a cocktail dress.
The range of prices is as different as the islands their selves. You can find simple semi- detached houses made of stone or the extravagant bungalow on stakes above a dream like lagoon where which a 100 m long private footbridge leads to. But what almost all islands have in common is the silence at the beach. If you step on the beach in front of your bungalow the next guest is often 50 to 100 m (to the left or right) away from you. Of course there are private beaches on some islands, too.

You will find differences in the cooking as well. We have never heard anything bad. The kitchen is almost without exception international which counts for the cooks, too. The menu is traditionally conditioned by the large variety of seafood and fishes. Besides, the meals are influenced by the Indian kitchen. The preparation of the food is often done with different curry-spice mixtures and rice.
If you want to spend your honeymoon on the Maldives talk to your wedding planner. He/She should know the best destination for honeymooning in the island estate. As an alternative we recommend the booking with one of the big all inclusive travel agency because the Maldives are hardly to be travelled to individually. Don’t instantly take the cheap organizer catalogue instead pay attention for a little luxury and exclusiveness – it’s your honeymoon! In principle one can say that there is no such thing as a bargain island. If you want a dream you have to pay for it. It’s the best to set yourself a limit before you start to look for your dream island.

What’s to do in a paradise except to chill, to read a nice book and to have a wonderful time together. Right! Water sports - as well over as under water. An absolute must should the exploration of your „home reef“ with a mask, snorkel and fins be. The Maldives Islands are on of the best diving territories of the world. Dive with sharks and mantas the wracks and at the plunge down of the outer reefs. You don’t know how to dive? - Here you find on of the best locations to learn it. The diving schools are international and have European security standards. The languages used for teaching are English, French and German. By the way, don’t panic because of the sharks those are with just a few exception small reef sharks. We have never heard of attacks on people. On the water the main attractions are catamaran-sailing and windsurfing in times of the monsoon. The perspective of your islands from a catamaran while you till the turquoise water with just one body is unforgettable. It might, next to the approach of the Maldives where you marvel at little oases of colour with a turquoise frame in the deep blue of the sea, for ever stay in your remembrance. Such a marvellous day finds its end at the bar with a few Heineken or excellently mixed cocktails. You fall asleep accompanied by the roar of the sea and wake up in the paradise – that are the Maldives Islands.
